Tutors & Courses

Danielle Saxon Reeves: 5-string Finger Style Banjo

This course will be open to all abilities, from beginners with a sound basic knowledge of the instrument as well as more experienced players of any banjo, as long as the instrument is played with the fingers (rather than picks or plectrum).

Basic notation and chord reading will be required; help can be provided with different reading abilities. We’ll use standard notation and chord symbols; music will have different difficulty levels. We will concentrate on improving confidence, technique, rhythm and tone.

There will be opportunities to share challenges and discuss how to deal with them, and where we can explore our approach to practice, learning and playing. Ensemble playing and accompaniment will be covered to encourage engagement with different musical styles, other instruments and musical formats.

Music will be provided, but students are welcome to bring along pieces they can already play or that they’re currently working on.

Roland Gallery: From the Baroque to Bossa Nova

Join us as we prepare a varied and vibrant programme of music for performance. The course will help you develop the skills needed to play in a large ensemble. The course is suitable for intermediate to advanced players. The music will be scored for mandolins, mandolas/octave mandolins, guitars and bass (preferably double bass). Music reading skills will be required and parts will be sent out beforehand. The primary focus of sessions will be to prepare ensemble pieces for performance, and during the classes there will be guidance, advice and instruction on any aspect of playing and performing. Topics to be covered will be warm-up exercises, technical improvement and maintenance, reading at sight, how to rehearse and work effectively in ensemble, projection and tone production, soloing and accompanying, interpretation, how to practise efficiently, and harmonic analysis where useful and appropriate.

Nick Wyke:From Ice to Fire – Music Across the Americas

A journey through the traditional and composed music of the Americas, from the snowy Canadian North, through U.S. Bluegrass and Old-time via Cuban Salsa to fiery Argentinian Tango in the South, this workshop will explore regional techniques, polyrhythms, accompaniments and arrangements. We’ll also use the music to explore wider concepts of theory, melody and harmony. It is open to mixed strings from both the plucked and bowed families, including mandolin, banjo, guitar, violin and cello amongst others. Music will be provided in advance in the form of notation with chord names. Tablature can be provided if required. Parts will be provided for players of varying abilities, but a good grasp of music reading, tablature or confident ear-learning would be an advantage, along with the ability to play some scales, tunes, chords or pieces confidently on your instrument as a minimum skill level.
